As for the historical contribution of the Nile river, it hardly needs any extensive introduction. But as i did my research for the 1860 Atlas, I found that this great river has five distinct personalities; The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Crossroad and The “Start”. These personalities have defined the areas around the river and the trade that was conducted along its banks.
The Good River portion was always the most important and relevant in history owing to its navigability, connectedness to other civilizations and overall fertile lands. This is were ancient Pharaonic Egypt grew up, what the Romans depended on for food, the powerhouse of the Muslim civilization and the most important, but slippery, province of the Ottoman Empire.
The Bad portion of the river also had pockets of fertility and saw its own great civilizations that were often at odds with the rulers of The Goods river; most prominently those of ancient Nubia and Medieval Makuria. Was it not for the physical nature of The Bad river, the entirety of the Nile river would be completely navigable from the Mediterranean down to modern day Uganda.
